Social Media Debate-Social Action

In our group's social media debate, we were asked to debate the POSITIVE of Social Action. At first we had it extremely difficult to come up with points and be able to understand the topic fully. However, after talking to the teachers and other students we learned that Social Action is being able to take action through a means a technology in order to make a change in society or the world. Whether people are joining forces on Facebook, Twitter, even YouTube!
PROS: First of all, we found that technology has actually provided us with better tools in order to make social action happen. People of all kinds and walks are able to join together from all over the world to discuss heated topics, and they're able to join forces on topics they may want to try and make better. Social Media can be used through technology in so many different ways whether it being protest such as Egypts government, raising awareness to charities, helping raise money for charities or even just having people join together on topics they agree or disagee on. In the throwing of Egypts leader, people were able to join together on Facebook, Twitter, etc and talk about their own perspectives. People were able to form groups, and weer able to talk together able being able to take action so they could better their lives, they were able to make plans and realize what they had to do to get what they wanted. Without social media technology, these people would've started fighting without a real reason or cause or without actually thinking about it. Social Media may also raise awareness, such as this month of "Movember", through the media people are always talking about Movember, people are posting pictures of their mustaches and people are joining together to judge and rate the best mustaches. Movember seems to be all over the news and the theme of the month- and while it's entertaining and fun, people are also becoming aware of the problems with Prostate Cancer, and the importance of raising money to stop it. Social Media may also even help raise money, because today people can see signs and read commercials where it says a special number to text and they can donate to places all over the world. Having this option to donate, makes it way easier for people to be able to donate money at the convience of their fingertips. Overall we found that technology actually helped people join together without actually thoughts and perspectives in their heads.
CONS: Although we did argue to postivie. Obviously our opposing group had their points which I may not nessecarily agree in but, their points should also be heard. The negative of our topic fought back that Social Media may able cause a lot of problems that lead to violence and that instead of helping people come aware it simply brings people together just to start a fight even though there may not be a direct or clear reason.

Personally, for me, when using some of these social media outlets I find it easier to talk about topics that may cause a heated argument or even when I'm just reading some people discussing a certain topic. I beleive it enables people to think about their arguments, and be able to research their arguments without blurting out things that they may to in person. Discussions via social media outlets actually provide a place for people to talk calmly and be able to gain awareness. I find that if I have a mind set about a topic, I can easily talk about it with people and maybe even learn from someone else.

I also do not beleive peers worry about sharing information online about their opinions. I beleive my peers acutally use technology to their full advantage in able to discuss ideas and topics and are able to vent to one another about topics of discussion. Even if you look at the simple trending topic #ymproblems, all students are joining together and talking about problems that they have within York Mills. Although it may be hilarious, ultimately people are joining and talking and I truly beleive that these problems are now out in the open and there may be action taken definetely in the future.

Social Media Campaign - Old Spice

Old Spice was once just a normal men's deoderant you could find in a local Shoppers Drug Mart. There was never anything very special about Old Spice- people would buy it if they liked the smell and the advertisements were never really memorable.
WHAT WORKED: Recently, they introduced a new approach to reel people in from their current soaps and deoderants to Old Spice, when they introduced a new face of the product and a new way of advertising their product with commercials such as "Smell like a man, man" with the NFL wide receiver named Isaiah Mustafa standing shirtless and giving the product unrealistic but hilarious strength and power to men. People found the way the camera went from scene to scene with Old Spice unique and hilarious at the same time. The part of Old Spice being a Social Media Campaign is because while the commercials were being aired - they also opened up on Twitter, Facebook etc to have people respond to their videos and be able to ask questions. Millions of people all over the world would respond and post hilarious videos right back and those who had questions - Old Spice and Mustafa himself was able to answer all questions through video responses. Even Stars such as Demi Moore and Ellen Degeneres were able to answer and this got people so intriduged that their questions really got answered and brought in a whole array of people.

An example that I found is over social media where Old Spice answers a question to a user
To Iggip0p, who asks, “What is the manliness thing you've ever done?”
“Probably the time I sprinted the summit of Mount Fuji with both my ankles snared in bear traps. No. It was probably when I wheelied my motorcycle for 10,000 consecutive kilometres on my way to Mount Fuji. Nevermind. I'm pretty sure it was the night before that, when I ripped off the metal siding on my house and used it to forge that motorcycle with my bare hands. While I was asleep. That was probably it.”
Old Spice was able to bring users and bring sales up by creating that sense of humour with the sense of having questions personally answered. It gave people the sense that they personally were served by Old Spice and this sense of being targetted and answered by something as big as Old Spice or Mustafa makes someone feel empowerment and special in a way.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK : However, the downfall was that Old Spice had millions of people asking questions. Obviously not all questions could be answered by Mustafa himself, and obviously there must be a waiting period for some people to have their questions answered. Old Spice had to think about giving people that personal feeling but also being able to keep up with millions of people so entertained and intrigued by the campaign.

Miss Represenation

After watching this video, it really made me open my eyes to how women are potrayed in today's society. There are may clips of different advertisements of women being treated as objects and aren't important- many of the clips would show parts of womens body's and not their face, and also clips of men being greater then women as in one clip all the men are standing over a womens body.I find it amazing to see all these ad's and not realize how terrible and degrading they are to women until they're put right in front of you. It's terrible to see that strong women have fought long and hard to gain respect in society - and to protect women's rights. Women are constantly degraded in society today, and yet so many people stand back and let it continue to unravel to how society once one. Young people of today are being so heavily influenced by ads and different advertisements that they begin to think that having your body taken over control by men, or body parts are the only important things in life. Young women beleive that they're only truly beautiful with minimal clothing on, or if they're surrounded by men. The different clips of women getting into unruly fights with one another also points to influences the youth are getting today. There are so many prime examples in this video of how women are only seen important or "powerful" when they look good - whether it's kids as young as 3 in shows such as Toddlers in Tiaras or it's the perfect bodied and looking Barbie dolls kids play with - women are constantly judged on what is on the outside and not on things such as morals, education and things on the inside. This video does a wonderful job on educating people of today of the effects media may have on society and it's leading people into dangerous lives. Showing clips of strong women pointing out their views and thoughts will only give women the power they need to realize that beauty is on the inside and what's outside shouldn't be important.

RE: Standford

After watching this video, it changed my whole perspective on how I thought I was going to be in the future and what I wanted to do with myself. Talking about doing what you love, and following your dreams no matter where it takes you really inspired me. It made me rethink everything that I was thinking about doing in terms of university. All my life I've had a love for animals - whether working around them, with them or having all my pets in my home. I love all kinds of animals- whether it being dogs and cats to birds, lizards or anything exotic. It's definetely be my dream in the future to be able to work with animals all day. I feel being with them everyday - whether caring for, helping or working around. Usually, when I tell people about my love for animals however- the first thing they say is to become a veterinarian. However, I also have found through highschool that the sciences don't exactly interest me nor am I very good at them. I feel it's time to look and see what career options there are out there. Anything involving animals will really make me happy for the rest of my life and a specfic career isn't really out there for me because anything to do with animals would make me happy. Whether I'm working at a barn with horses, or taking care of elephants at the zoo or training. I definetely don't see myself working in an office or doing paperwork all day. At home, I'm really happy because my parents support anything I choose to do - even though I'm having trouble deciding right now. I hope I can find that perfect career and live my life doing something I love.

Peer Evaluation

Name: Emily Newbold
Name of Production Team: Teen Vogue
Role in Production Team: Section Editor
Roles of the other production team members:
Nathalie Black Design Direction
Katrina Litsos Editor- in - Cheif

Answer the following questions in order to assess yourself and the effectiveness of your group and members and determine the problem-solving strategies that worked within your group dynamic.

1. How do you feel about the title you were given and how well you did your job in this project? Give specific examples of your experience.
I feel being section editor was a really interesting job to have in this assignment and I felt like I was in the middle of all the action happening in the production of our magazine. Obviously individually we did our three articles, and then we did our final spread together. After these articles were finished it was my job to be able to get them into the right orders, design how it would be laid out (back to back pages, full spreads) and be able to manage all the articles and spreads together. I feel I did my job very well, and it showed in our final product. I was also in charge of getting different ads and placing them selectively in our magazines.
Next time, I would not procrastine and I would make sure that before going to print I made sure 100% that I had everything laid out and ready to go. Leaving even the simple things such as printing to the last minute could've potenially ruined our final product and getting it on time. Luckily we were lucky this time in getting everything organized and printed but having it done a few days earlier would have left us with some room to relax and have time to change our magazine if we came up with more ideas.

Next time, I would not try and make the whole project individual. In the beginning, I kept the thought to myself that it would be more of an individual project. Although we did get everything together very nicely, it would've been helpful to meet up once and put the final project together rather then having everyone send things to eachother. The work itself was seperated very well for each team member however, just in the final stages of the project it would have been a good idea for a final meeting.

2. How did you contribute to this project? Give at least 2 specific examples.
As a section editor, I got all the articles sent to me in order to do alterations and change words up a little. I was also in charge of coming up with ideas of how the pages would be set up throughout the magazine, and I was in charge of giving ads to put throughout the magazine that would suite our topics. Each article had it's our spread and layout and we had to figure out how to perfectly combine all the articles and have the final spread.

Next time, I would work harder to make keep track of what my teammates were doing. Although it may not be my task, it would be nice to know of how teammates were doing and what stage they were at exactly so I could know myself where and how I could help.
Next time, I would not hestitate to say any ideas or suggestions I have for my teammates. Even though everyone knew what they were doing, it still may be important to know opinions.

3. How do you feel about the contributions from other members of your group and the division of labour (work) for the project? Be specific to each team member.
Each of us decided from the very start of what our roles would be and I feel as a group we worked really well together and stuck to our roles. Katrina did a wonderful job of putting together all the articles and constructing

4. When it comes to dealing with differences of opinion within your group:
I feel our group worked amazingly together. Being friends and knowing eachothers strengths and weaknesses, and knowing that we were able to work together as a team and make sure everyone knew what to do and how to accomplish.

5. In dealing with group members who were not fulfilling their responsibilities:
I feel as a group we worked really well together and I have nothing to complain about. All of us met as soon as the project was assigned, and we gave each of the members a task to finish and complete. All the members fulfilled our their responsibilites with flying colours and even overexceeded it.

Ratings:

Overall, I would rate our group's ability to remain on task as:

Excellent

Overall, I would rate our group's ability to be open, respectful, and communicative as:

Excellent

Overall, I would rate our group's ability to use the strengths of all of our members as:

Excellent

How successful is your project? Give specific examples for your reasons.

Excellent
I felt the end product of our magazine was very successul. All of our group members used their strengths in the making of it and it really showed in our magazine. An example is Nathalie's talent with photoshop - it really helps in the making of the magazine to look professional but also unique. It helped that we all worked together in order to decide we should have page numbers, table of contents- and all our creativity was put into the magazine. We also worked really well in deciding how to make the final product excellent - by having it printed and binded nicely. All of us did our own work but I felt we also stepped it up by putting some of our own ideas in the magazine and making it realistic with ads and everything.

Analyzing Media - Presentation

Personally, I found the presentation of media that was done in IDC class to be very informing, interesting and also gave me new views on how I saw the media and actually helped me learn a lot. Some things that I found quite interesting that I never noticed before was the concept the way commercials target their audiences and the different forms they do so. The most interesting commercials I found were the comparison of the Maybelline and Dove commercials. The reason for this is because when I first originally saw them on the screen, I thought to myself that the Dove commercial was definitely all in the right and the Maybelline commercial simply gave all viewers the wrong image of perfection and beauty. However, when they were analyzed critically - you found that both companies are actually doing the same thing in advertising to the public. Maybelline simply shows that to reach perfection - you must buy their dream mousse foundation and that they'll make you look pore-less and beautiful. Meanwhile, Dove took the route that they portrayed themselves as a better company because they don't force this fake beauty on women. However, although Dove made themselves look like the good guy - both companies in the end are doing to the same thing in order to sell a product. This presentation made me realize the little things companies do in commercials in order to get encourage to purchase products. I feel that after this presentation I won't look at commercials the same way - because I'm going to begin to notice the little things they do in order to encourage purchases by people. I feel that everyone should be able to get educated on media education and analysis because it's something our generation will be dealing with for the rest of our lives.

Medium is the Message

"Medium is the Message" is a quote said once by Marshall McLuhan. When first hearing this quote, I found it a little confusing because I personally always thought that it wasn't really important how or what medium was used, but the only importance was the actually message being delivered. However, after doing a little research on the topic I found that McLuhan's quote actually made a lot of sense. At first, I thought that McLuhan meant that the content wasn't important, and only the medium was. McLuhan actually proposed that throughout that time, media was developing so quickly and the world was technologically advancing so fast. However, the public and everyone focused only on the content that they saw in front of them, not even realizing how rapidly society was changing. People didn't notice that their lives were changing, their daily routines were now revolving around media. All the people were being mind blown by this new age of information and ways access that they norms of society began to change so rapidly and nobody could stop and notice that lives were changing. People now aren't thinking about mailing letters, or sending postcards - people are now sending emails, picture texts and skyping! McLuhan points out that yes, the content may be important however, the medium is equally as important in gaining knowledge and the message.  I find it amazing how ridiculous the truth is; that people really don't notice how fast the world is technologically advancing. McLuhan opened the world up to a different perspective and allowed people to actually realize something that's happening in front of them.

MEDIA CONSUMPTION AND BEAUTY

In today's society, media seems to be a factor in everyone's everyday lives, and media seems to influence people in many different ways. A good example is media in the lives of teenagers and the influence it has on their outlook on lives - especially beauty and body images. Media seems to have an effect on teens because today media is something that is used in everyone's everyday lives and media is always around us whether we're paying attention or not. It seems teens of today have been engulfed by this media trend whether using cellphones to tvs. The effect media has on these teens is quite controverisal - in ways it could provide good morals and ethics and ideas for teens and their images but, it appears that media seems to potray more negative aspects on teen beauty over the good.

For one, the television seems to be a main source of where teens find "beauty tips or advice" that influence themselves. Teens are able to watch different types of television shows. These shows potray different types of people, and show's the different ways people may want to express themselves. In shows, directors seem to potray characters in their best moments and teens may begin to beleive that this is the way they should begin to act or look. For example, the show The OC - potrays all their characters looking bright, charismatic and they're only really happy when they look beautiful with their hair and make up done. Although shown subtly, teens take in all this information in their heads because the beauty of these people begin to influence their personal images. Characters on TV show that only beauty on the outside will get you somewhere in life, and shows teens that looking, and acting like these people will make them get somewhere in life and make them feel better about themselves.

Not only does the television influence the beauty of teens - but also even the use of supermodels and advertising. Models appear to only look beautiful and feel good when they are wearing minimal clothing, and a lot of make up. Victoria Secret models for one, are always wearing makeup, the least amount of clothing and are always positioned in inappropriate ways - which again makes teens beleive that looking like these models are the only way they can look their best.Teens are sucked into buying different products or lingerie in this case - in order to make themselves look like these superficial models. Along with the use of models, different advertisements on television can also cause a negative impact on teens. Different commercials of make up and different products for the body influence teens beauty negatively - it makes the youth beleive that they aren't good enough until they purchase these certain products to enhance their natural body. Commercials such as the Nivea Bodycream that claims will make you lose inches - gives false hope for people and makes teens think that beauty is all in looking skinnier and beauty is only on the outside.

It's amazing to see how the consumption of media has such a huge impact on the beauty of today's teens. Whether is teens walking around with their faces caked with makeup attempting to mimic faces they see from TV such as Jersey Shore or Degrassi to teens walking around trying to show their bodies in order to make themselves look beautiful. The media age keeps growing and is in everyday's lives - there's no real way your going to be able to shield your kids from this growing age. It seems that the true beauty in everyone is being covered by teens that absorb all this false information from TV and base their beauty on what they see on television.

Influence of the Television

Throughout many decades, technology has been evergrowing and year after year many different technological advances have been made. These advances, also begin to advance the changes in society and how people live their everyday lives. One of the most populaur of technology that changed society is the television. However the impact that the television has made on society is controversial. For one, it benefits us because people are able to become quickly updated on news throughout the world and stay connected. The television provides us with entertainment on the shows we may watch, and it also may help up buy better with commercials advertising different products. People no longer have to look at the paper to see what's on TV, they simply can push a button and hundred of channels may appear on the screen - and people of all types can find a show that they're interested in. Also, People don't have to wait to find out the news they can simply find all they need on the TV whether breaking news, weather updates, traffic etc. However as everything does, the television also has some negative impacts on society. For one, it makes society less active and on their feets, as having a tv provides you with all the useful information you need and you can even buy straight from TV ads. People may become "couch potatoes" and therefore their health may be at risk. Even the shows that are played on the television may impact people - such as sitcoms etc. Children and Teens may watch shows and feel the need to be like characters who may be rowdy or crazy or disrespectful. People may soak up the way people act on television and may bring it to life. Overall, the TV has many different pros and cons but in the end it really depends how people monitor what they watch and how much they may watch.

What is my Learning Style?

All people are different and unique in their own ways, especially when it comes to learning styles. There are many different ways of learning each unique person in the world may have. Some learning styles include kinesthetic, visual, auditory, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Personally, I believe I show a lot of characteristics of a kinesthetic learner. Which, in shorter terms means a person that easily learns by actually doing something physically. Examples of this type of learner is someone who doesn't do very well when looking at text, and understands better if they are able to read it aloud or while walking. The reason I beleive I am a kinesthetic learner is because I really don't like being sat down in a class and being talked to and handed notes because the information doesn't set into my mind. I like being able to be able to take action and actually do something productive and learning while actually having a more hands on experience. Sitting in silence and studying simple doesn't work for me as a study method. Being able to be in action and up and learning works well for me, and that shows in the sports I play whether soccer to horseback riding, I like to be able to work on my skills while getting coached at it and being given tips. Also, even when I'm studying at home for a test, I always am pacing back and forth while practicing or memorizing or I'm listening to music. In the class of IDC, I beleive my kinesthetic learning will actually help me do well. Being able to study different aspects of media, and actually be able to physically see and hear and experience them will help me better understand media. When we start to make movies, being able to act different roles, edit them ourselves and be able to work creatively, I beleive my kinesthetic learning style will help me understand everything and help different concepts of the course sink into my mind.
Not only do I have the kinesthetic learning style but, I also believe I share traits of being a Intrapersonal learner. Which means learners that enjoy being able to contemplate ideas in their heads, and be able to think to themselves before actually taking action in an important role. I believe I am an intrapersonal learner at times because I don't like to work in big groups because I like being able to keep projects organized with a small group rather then have the roles of people spread too widely throughout the group. An example of how I'm a intrapersonal learner in real life, is when I'm working for a group project - I really like to make sure everyone has different roles and we can collaborate ideas together and I find it easier to communicate when the groups are smaller. When given an assignment, I really appreciate when they are explained very throughly and the expectations are clear, because in my head it helps me thinks of different goals I must acheive to put my best foot forward. This will help me in the course because fortunately we are allowed to be able to pick our group members and also the number of members -therefore we'll be to choose people we know we'll work productively with. I also feel that before I take action in a role of a project, I like to think to myself first of the pros and cons of each and be able to think of an idea rather then coming up with an idea with a spur of the moment. Being an intrapersonal will help me achieve my goals of doing well, and finishing projects that I know I put my hardest effort and work into.
Overall, having both of these learning skills will combine to help me do best in this class. Being able to have the opportunity to have work where I'll be able to be in action, be up and working, and being able to have a hands on experience with media, movies etc will help me understand the collaboration of the course altogether. When it comes to doing projects, and working with other people - I know have an intrapersonal learning style, I'm going to come up with good ideas and be able to work to achieve my goals being confident of them.
